Welcome to GP-PU

 The Graduate Program on Physics for the Universe (GPPU) will start soon to provide graduate school education for graduate students on doctoral program at Tohoku University, we arrange the world's top class faculty members as our concurrent appointed teacher who have a proven record of producing high quality research outputs in physics for the Universe.
 We also invite top level researchers from abroad and develop graduate school education program in cooperation with overseas educational research institutions.

Number of Recruitment

 Graduate Program on Physics for the Universe, (here after, GP-PU) will recruit approximately 10 graduate students in April 2017

Eligibility

 Those who will be enrolled basically as a second year Master’s student at Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, as of April 2017. However, only in the 2017 of academic year, students who are scheduled to enroll in the first year of the three-year Doctoral Program will be allowed to participate in the Program, as a special case. The applicant should conduct research related to physics for the Universe, and plan to continue on to the Doctoral program soon after completing their Master’s program. The applicant should also have a strong recommendation from their academic supervisor with an expectation to be appropriate to join GP-PU.
  • GP-PU is a continuous graduate program, basically starting from the second year in Master’s program, followed by three years of Doctoral program. Only the students who plan to continue on to the Doctoral program are eligible to apply for this program.
  • Of universities and research institutes approved by the Program Committee of GP-PU, those which plan to specifically promote the conclusion of agreements related to jointly supervised degrees are recognized as our overseas partner universities or departments. At the moment, these include, University of California (Barkley), University of Amsterdam (NIKHEF Institute), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Washington, Hampton University (Jefferson Lab.), Mainz University (Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz), University of Wisconsin, Australian National University, Princeton University, Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics(Orsay), Seoul University, University of Michigan, Max Plank Institute, DESY, GSI, CERN, Chinese Academy of Science, Jagiellonian University, University of Hawaii.

  • Original copy of academic transcripts (undergraduate and graduate transcripts/duplicate copies not allowed)
  • If certificates to be submitted are written in a foreign language other than English, a Japanese or English translation must be attached. (A translation prepared by the applicant is acceptable.)
  • Incomplete applications are not accepted.
  • Submitted application documents are not returnable.

Selection method

 Applicants will be screened upon the submitted documents and the interview result. Interviews will be conducted between Tuesday, February 21 and Friday, February 24, 2017. Details will be informed to the applicant later.

Announcement of application results

 The announcement of application results will be sent to all applicants by e-mail by around Friday, March 31, 2017.

Financial support

 To gather excellent students from inside and outside of Japan, and to have them plan and practice independent and original research, we, a premium degree conferring program, hire the students at GP-PU as a research assistant (RA). We pay them salaries for their work to be part of their financial support, and this helps to foster them to be a leader in a global scale.
 The amount of work and salary will be determined by the rules at Tohoku University.
 If you are currently receiving a scholarship or a financial support, consult us in advance in order not to violate any regulations among them.
 Part-time jobs are basically not allowed for the students at GP-PU, based on the aim of the program. However, it may be allowed in some cases, such as when it can be considered as part of their study or research, and up to some extent.

Completion requirements

To participate in this program, students are required to enter the Department of Physics and Astronomical Institute, Graduate School of Science and Faculty of Science, Tohoku University.
